As SWAN staff complete the profiling process, we are continuing to plan the training program. In addition to instructor-led training, library staff will have access to SirsiDynix Mentor, an online learning portal. Through SirsiDynix Mentor, staff can take self-paced online training courses on Symphony, Enterprise, and other SirsiDynix products.
We will use the L2 directory to create training accounts for library staff members. Mentor will be a valuable training resource, and we want to be sure that all staff who will use Symphony or Enterprise have access. Please update your L2 account by August 22.
Individuals may create their own L2 accounts, or L2 accounts may be managed by a library director or their designee.
Administrators, please review your library's L2 accounts by August 22 and:
* Remove accounts for staff no longer with the library
* Create accounts for library staff not listed.
If you have questions about L2 account creation and maintenance, please refer to the RAILS documentation, available at https://www.railslibraries.info/l2help/account

SWAN Library Directors & Administrators:
Forgive me for any cross-posting.
The Illinois State Library is proposing rules changes to the Library System Act, and there is currently a public comment process available online. Refer to this URL:
http://illibrarysystemstandards.wordpress.com/multitype-library-system-admi…
If you have not taken a look at the proposed changes, I would encourage you to do so and to also read the comments that many of your colleagues have already left. There are some significant changes being proposed, and they are worthy of your time.
This public comment phase ends on Monday, August 18th. My understanding of the next steps are as follows:
1. The draft rules changes (with possible changes based on the public comment period included) will be presented to the Illinois State Library Advisory Committee (ISLAC) in September. Here is a link to information about ISLAC:
http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/about/committees/comm…
2. After the committee's approval, it will go to the General Assembly's Joint Committee on Administrative Rules (JCAR).
Information in RAILS E-News was shared today about this process:
http://us1.campaign-archive1.com/?u=2c51285b8d63e23716bce030f&id=aa35942047…
RAILS Executive Director Dee Brennan has critiqued the proposed changes in her blog:
https://www.railslibraries.info/director-blog/20140723/system-rules-changes…
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, I have attached a RAILS document titled "Detailed Analysis of Proposed Changes to Administrative Rules" sent to the RAILS Directors-Only email community. The RAILS comments in the document are very insightful and provide a detailed analysis of the proposed changes.
My apologies again for any cross-posting of information. I would encourage discussion at the SWAN Committee of the Whole meeting next week Tuesday at Tinley Park Public Library.

SWAN Member Libraries & Information Technology Staff:
With SWAN's ILS migration to SirsiDynix just a little under a year away, now is a good time to begin planning any hardware upgrades necessary to ensure your library's workstations, network, and peripherals are compatible with the new system. To ensure the most accurate information is available for this purpose, SWAN will be regularly updating the SWANtech Hardware section over the next several months with hardware requirements and recommendations to clarify SirsiDynix's compatibility with your library's current hardware and establish the necessity for upgrades. As SWAN tests compatibility and uncovers additional information through training and documentation, the list of requirements will become more complete. The list of recommendations will also be updated as technology evolves in the computer industry and within our libraries, so be sure to check back frequently!
As discussed in last Thursday's SWANtech meeting, SWAN staff have established the first in this series of recommendations. Our first entry in SWANtech Hardware details desktop requirements and recommendations for systems running SirsiDynix Symphony Workflows (staff client), Enterprise (OPAC), and Bluecloud (mobile/cloud platform). You can find our desktop requirements and recommendations at the link below.
https://support.swanlibraries.net/hardware
With regard to the desktop configuration, SirsiDynix's system offerings are not terribly resource-intensive, and their desktop requirements do not vary significantly from our current Innovative Millennium installations. However, if your library is currently in the process of upgrading or planning an upgrade of any desktop or laptop hardware, it is important to ensure your new hardware is equipped with at least the minimum requirements, if not the recommended to ensure the security, integrity, and longevity of your systems.
Should you have any questions or comments about the SWANtech Hardware series or need some help planning a hardware upgrade, please don't hesitate to contact me at the avenues listed below.
Thank you,

To SWAN Member Libraries:
As we migrate to SirsiDynix Symphony, we will be in touch through a series of surveys to collect information about your library.
Each library has already completed a survey about hardware and peripherals in use at your location. We will send future surveys to collect information on your library's online tools, specific training needs, and more. We appreciate the time and effort you already have and will continue to put into completing these questionnaires.
This survey will gather information on your library's existing policies in a number of areas. We will use your responses as we move forward in the profiling process. We will do all that we can to configure Symphony to match the settings you describe below, but cannot guarantee results.
You can access the survey directly<http://fs8.formsite.com/SWANServices/form160/index.html> or by visiting support.swanlibraries.net.<http://support.swanlibraries.net/>
We have included the option to create an account in order to save your work and return to it later. This is optional-creating a login is not required to complete this survey.
This process is moving quickly, and we need responses as soon as possible to stay on schedule. We do understand that this is a quick turnaround. If you have any questions about the information we're asking for, please do not hesitate to contact the SWAN migration team at MigrationHelp(a)swanlibraries.net<mailto:MigrationHelp@swanlibraries.net>.
If we have not received a response from your library by End of Business on August 7th, we will use default settings for your configuration. There will be opportunities to update information like closing dates, and we will be implementing a rigorous testing process to catch other errors. This is not your final opportunity to adjust configuration settings, but the more accurate the information we collect now is, the more we'll be prepared for a smooth go live.
Again, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions, and thank you in advance for your timely replies.

The best part is, you can conference-in from anywhere with a computer, internet connection, and headset or phone!
The Meeting URL listed below can be used to view the slideshow presentation as well as participate in the discussion (with necessary headset or speakers and microphone). For those of you without a headset, the audio portion of webinar can be accessed via the conference number below.
