To Library Staff:
SWAN staff been investigating a number of comments from library staff regarding the
inaccuracy of the "Available for Checkout" number displayed in Enterprise. As a
result, we will be temporarily removing this number effective Friday, July 24th, until we
can identify a solution. Read on for more details.
An availability number appears on the hit list display as well as the availability tab of
the detailed display. During our training and configuration process, we had been
instructed that the "available" flag in an item's location (set in Symphony
configuration tables) determined if the item counted as available in Enterprise or not,
but that does not seem to be the case.
Instead, this Knowledge Base
article<https://support.sirsidynix.com/kb/136792> says
that items are "available" in Enterprise if:
* Not a shadow item
* Not in a shadowed location
* Not on reserve
* Not in transit
* Have no charges
* Are not flagged to be recirculated
This seems more in line with what we are seeing in Enterprise. That means that on order
items, items on the hold shelf, items in locations like Reference, etc. are all included
as available in the counts. Furthermore, the numbers displayed in the detailed display and
the hit list do not match. Neither seems to reflect the actual number of copies that one
could walk into a library and check out.
Because of the number of issues this is causing library staff and patrons, we will be
temporarily removing both counts as we continue to investigate with SirsiDynix. Ideally,
we would like to display a true number of available copies-those sitting on a shelf ready
to be checked out. We will be making this change on Friday morning. It will not require
any downtime. We will send an update to the membership when we reach a more sustainable
resolution.
Thank you for your continued feedback on Symphony and Enterprise.
