Important information for libraries with T1 circuits

SWAN Member Library and Information Technology Staff: We recently received the following message (in italics) from Robin Woodsome at ICN, and thought it would be of great interest to libraries that rely on T1 connections for internet service. Even if you are currently running a Comcast Business line, this option may be beneficial to create some redundancy in your connections to prevent extended outages. AT&T is providing very aggressive pricing on MetroEthernet service for E-Rate eligible sites which includes K12 schools and libraries. Sites do not need to participate in the E-Rate program to receive the new pricing. One library's quote was $277 per month for a 10Mbps ASE Ethernet circuit which is the same price of an AT&T T1 circuit of 1.5Mbps. Given this recent pricing change, I recommend that any libraries with a T1 circuit request pricing on AT&T ASE Ethernet service if they are interested in upgrading. There are not early termination penalties when a site upgrades from T1 to ME service. I can also provide quotes on ICN bandwidth levels available through the State allocation. I invite people to contact me for additional information and help in securing quotes from AT&T. Additional information on AT&T T1 service: * AT&T is sun setting T1 and DS3 service over the next 6 years * Timeline is not finalized but we can expect that T1 and DS3 service will not be available by 2020, and perhaps as early as 2018 * A more specific timeline is being developed by AT&T and will be publicized as soon as available * ICN constituents may continue to order T1 service on the state contract but only for 36 month terms * T1 customers will receive a "withdrawal of service" notice at least 12 months prior to the cancellation of the T1/DS3 service * Current T1 contracts may be renewed under the 36 month term option" Please feel free to forward this to any interested parties. Change Management Workshops for Directors and Staff available for registration

Everyone - The two Change Management half-day workshops being presented by Kathryn Deiss on Thursday, Oct. 9th are now open for registration. Please limit your registration to one person per library in each session. Change Management for SWAN Administrators/Directors http://www.librarylearning.info/events/?eventID=17747 In this half-day workshop specifically designed for leaders and high level managers, participants will learn the dynamics of change processes, understand resistance to change and how to manage it, learn about different sources of power and the relation of power to change, and understand the critical importance of transitions in the effective implementation of change. Through interactive exercises, lecture, and small group work, participants will gain a common understanding of how to lead the significant changes being implemented in the SWAN libraries. An exploration of organizational culture and its role in the success of the organization is also a key element of this workshop. New template for bill notices starting on June 18th.

Everyone- Dave Pacin of SWAN Member Services has developed a new template for patron bills. The SWAN Circ Advisory Committee reviewed the template at their last meeting, made a few suggestions, and it is now ready for use. We will begin using the new bill next Wednesday, June 18th. I have attached a sample so you can view it now. It is formatted to work with either a single or double window envelope. There is new information in the footer on each bill, including the patron's barcode, ptype, item location, and whether it is a local, reciprocal borrowing, or ILL transaction. Don't be concerned, we are not changing the manner in which we distribute these bills, they will be handled as you have directed us previously. SWAN June Quarterly Presentation Posted

SWAN Libraries: The SWAN Executive Director report from the June 5 Quarterly meeting is now available online. https://support.swanlibraries.net/sites/default/files/meeting/2014-06-05/SW… The live streaming of the event was successful with around 45 concurrent viewers throughout the entire meeting. We noted a few areas for improvement with the sound and some of the presenter devices (SirsiDynix challenged us by bringing 4 different types of devices that were used through the demonstration). SirsiDynix CEO Bill Davison will be on site along with four members of his team to share with everyone a lot of great information that will get you excited for the big changes coming in SWAN. Based on what SWAN staff and I saw presented at the COSUGI conference in Detroit, we encourage attendance at our meeting in RAILS Burr Ridge. They will introduce the new developments within the BLUEcloud suite including eResource Central, Enterprise, MobileCirc, Analytics, and Cataloging. FirstSearch links to your scoped catalog

+++ Please route to appropriate personnel +++ Everyone- Today I logged into the FirstSearch Administrative account for every SWAN library and updated the links, when necessary, to your scoped catalog. Previously these links were addressed to the former catalog address of swan.mls.lib.il.us . This address has now been updated to http://catalog.swanlibraries.net/search~Sx (the x being your individual scoping code). The updating at OCLC of these changes usually takes overnight. You should be able to test these links tomorrow in FirstSearch. I updated the ISBN search to the new catalog address also. This updating should now allow patrons and other libraries to quickly verify the status of your item in the SWAN catalog, just as they did previously when using FirstSearch. SWAN Member Library RFID Survey

SWAN Member Libraries & Information Technology Staff: Does your library currently utilize RFID in any capacity, or is your library interested in implementing RFID sometime in the future? Over the years, SWAN libraries have shown an increasing interest in RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) as a method to improve inventory and circulation. Seeing as there are a variety of configurations offered by third party vendors, and several configurations already in place at select SWAN member libraries, SWAN is performing a survey and inventory of those configurations with hopes that we might assist other member libraries in deploying future RFID installations. The election will run May 5th through May 23rd, and the new Board will be announced the week of May 26th via SWANcom. SWAN Proposed Bylaws Revision - Document Now Available

SWAN Member Libraries: As noted in the April 8th Committee of the Whole meeting, the SWAN Board has been working on a number of modifications to the current SWAN Bylaws. The Bylaws Committee, chaired by board members Sheila Sosnicki and Pierre Gregoire, presented their suggested changes to the membership during the April 8th meeting. In the link below, the proposed changes are provided to you in a red-lined copy of the Bylaws document, with an attached memo noting the changes. SWAN is testing computer generated delivery routing labels

Everyone - Last week we asked Melrose Park Public Library to begin testing a new print template for a transit slip to be used with RAILS delivery. This label prints on the Restick printers and can be used for items being checked in to fill holds. While it works perfectly for those items being sent from the home library to fill a hold at another SWAN library, we are still a tweaking a few other scenarios. Just wanted everyone to be aware that there is testing going on and you may see one of these labels as we continue to improve them. Have a good week.
