SWAN Committee of the Whole Meeting: Agenda and Directions 5/13/14

SWAN Member Library RFID Survey

SWAN Member Libraries & Information Technology Staff: Does your library currently utilize RFID in any capacity, or is your library interested in implementing RFID sometime in the future? Over the years, SWAN libraries have shown an increasing interest in RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) as a method to improve inventory and circulation. Seeing as there are a variety of configurations offered by third party vendors, and several configurations already in place at select SWAN member libraries, SWAN is performing a survey and inventory of those configurations with hopes that we might assist other member libraries in deploying future RFID installations. SWAN Board Election Begins Today!

SWAN Members: Voting for the SWAN Board Election opens today, for the one vacancy on the SWAN Board beginning on July 1, 2014. The election will run May 5th through May 23rd, and the new Board will be announced the week of May 26th via SWANcom. The poll can now be found online on the front page of the SWAN website, at http://support.swanlibraries.net/news/2014-05-05/swan-board-election-polls-… as a news item. SWAN Proposed Bylaws Revision - Document Now Available

SWAN Member Libraries: As noted in the April 8th Committee of the Whole meeting, the SWAN Board has been working on a number of modifications to the current SWAN Bylaws. The Bylaws Committee, chaired by board members Sheila Sosnicki and Pierre Gregoire, presented their suggested changes to the membership during the April 8th meeting. In the link below, the proposed changes are provided to you in a red-lined copy of the Bylaws document, with an attached memo noting the changes. SWAN is testing computer generated delivery routing labels

Everyone - Last week we asked Melrose Park Public Library to begin testing a new print template for a transit slip to be used with RAILS delivery. This label prints on the Restick printers and can be used for items being checked in to fill holds. While it works perfectly for those items being sent from the home library to fill a hold at another SWAN library, we are still a tweaking a few other scenarios. Just wanted everyone to be aware that there is testing going on and you may see one of these labels as we continue to improve them. Have a good week. Thank YOU, SWAN Member Libraries! (Network Migration Project Completed)

SWAN Member Libraries & Information Technology Staff: A sigh of relief is in order, as the SWAN Network Migration Project has concluded successfully! Over the last nine months, SWAN has accomplished the network reconfiguration that has been on our radars for some time. Granted, there will be some additional clean-up in the upcoming months moving non-essential services to our new network, but the server migration and configuration of the new network (the aspects that directly involve our member libraries) is now complete. Here are a few of the benefits we're now observing as a result of the migration... 1. IP addressing scheme - SWAN servers now have the appropriate internal and external IP addressing to allow network independence and greater flexibility for future configuration. 2. Swanlibries.net domain - All servers have been migrated to the new Swanlibraries.net domain, so that MLS/SLS addresses can be permanently retired. 3. Firewall hardware - SWAN servers are connected to new SonicWall hardware, allowing enhanced security functions and extended support. 4. FQDN support - Many 3rd party vendor services and hardware now reference SWAN servers via the Fully Qualified Domain Name as opposed to the IP address, allowing flexibility in future IP and server changes. 5. Improved aliased email service - Aliased emails can now be changed via a form on our support.swanlibraries.net homepage, and are managed through a much more reliable service.
