SWAN Board Members:
The election process concluded last Friday as of 5pm. The three candidates that were on the slate have all been contacted as of today. This election was very close, the closest I have dealt with since arriving at SWAN in 2008.
David Seleb was elected from a total of 44 cast votes. I spoke with Anne Kozak this afternoon and she of course is disappointed, but wanted to make sure that her involvement in the Ambassador Program could continue. I assured her that she indeed can continue as a co-chair with Jim, noting that Jeannie Dilger continued on in her co-chair responsibility with the ILS Committee after she left the SWAN Board.
I also contacted Tammy Clausen from Berwyn and thanked her for putting her self-nomination forward.
The board seat David was elected to starts in July, which is always a tough month due to summer vacations scheduled, so he is not able to attend until the August meeting.
I will add David to the SWAN Board email list at some point after the quarterly meeting.
Anne, since you are on this list I would like to personally thank you and am grateful I had the opportunity to work with you on the SWAN Board. I would encourage you to put your name forward next year for the positions that will be opening up.
Have a great weekend,
Aaron

SWAN Board,
RAILS Finance Accountant Merilynn Nagle resigned yesterday morning. I am in the process of changing bank account access with RAILS, but if you are contacted at all during this process, for security purposes please reach out directly to me. We just need to be careful.

SWAN Board Members:
The Tuesday 5/13 meeting packet is now available for you:
http://support.swanlibraries.net/sites/default/files/meeting/2014-05-13/pac…
The packet is 42 pages long. The board meeting will be held at Prairie State College after the Committee of the Whole meeting ends and everyone has had a bite to eat (scheduled for noon but the COW meetings don't tend to go much past 11). This is the lightest board meeting agenda we've had since I've been here so hopefully it will be a breeze! :)
Thank you,

Hello SWAN Board,
Though Rich will not be able to show everyone around next Tuesday after all, Aaron will still be following his recommendation for lunch at the Bergstein's NY Deli, for those who'd like to eat with him (you guys will have to go to the restaurant to eat, rather than me being able to order something for you all): http://bergsteinsny.com/menu/
If you'd prefer, you are also welcome to eat on your own if deli is not your thing! As he mentioned, there isn't much around there to have delivered, but he has noted that there is a McDonald's and a Burrito Station near to the school, as well as an Egg and I restaurant around the corner.
Thank you,

Hello SWAN Board,
Just a reminder that, if we do want to go over the board self-evaluation results at the next Board meeting, I will need all documents submitted to me by Monday so that I can get them tallied and included in the board packet.
Thanks all! :)

I will be attending the LIMRiCC meeting this Wednesday, 4/30. I've attached the PowerPoint of the topics to be covered. If you are unable to attend and would like me to investigate anything specifically, or ask questions on your behalf, please let me know by Tuesday PM. I will provide a report on any pertinent topics at the next board meeting.
Thanks,

SWAN Board,
Just an FYI. RAILS received a FOIA request for emails pertaining to Orland Park Public Library. RAILS is reviewing the emails with its legal counsel, and some of the emails which pertain to SWAN and Orland patron business transactions (patrons that owe money, etc.), Internet Access, migration, etc. were removed from the initial group of emails.
Keep in mind that we share a single email system, so I am wondering if SWAN and RAILS continuing this arrangement so will need to undergo some attorney review and recommendation.

SWAN Board,
At the RAILS Consortia Committee yesterday, Paul Mills from Fountaindale/Pinnacle noted that Leslie Bednar from Heartland wrote a message to the SHARE group about the Polaris acquisition by Innovative. SHARE is running on Polaris so they needed to provide some message to their libraries.

An open letter to IHLS members
The spring winds brought news of change in the library software world. Polaris Library Systems was acquired by Innovative Interfaces Inc. on April 1. As the integrated library software (ILS) platform for the SHARE Consortium, this news was troubling to some members and curious to others. IHLS signed a solid, 7-year contract with Polaris in June 2012, and that contract remains intact. We intend to honor this contract fully and expect Innovative Interfaces Inc. to do the same. In fact, the president of Innovative, Kim Massana, acknowledged there are no plans to sunset the Polaris platform.
The news of the merger reminds me that I am grateful the strength of our IHLS organization lies in our relationships with each other, our members' deep commitments to resource sharing and serving patrons in our service area, and the accuracy of data within the SHARE LLSAP database. Our core values are shared by our stakeholders--IHLS member libraries, the Illinois State Library, the Illinois library community and library patrons in the southern half of our state. We are an organization built on collaboration and the delivery of innovative and accessible library services.
Software vendors will wax and wane, and the services they offer will evolve. In our several decades of shared library automation in Illinois the true constant is our desire to provide improved resource discovery services to patrons and support to the member libraries who serve them. As library systems in Illinois reach their 50th anniversary in 2015, the automation opportunities for libraries are robust and varied.
Alphonse Kaar wrote "The more things change, the more they stay the same." An apt sentiment for reflection as we move happily toward an enlarged SHARE organization.

Hi all,
Attached are the board self-evaluation document and the director evaluation form. The goal for these two documents is:
* For you to complete the Board Self-Evaluation document and send it back to me by no later than Monday, May 5th so that I may compile the results and have them ready for the board packet to go out that Thursday.
* For you to review the director evaluation and propose any suggested edits (Aaron's review isn't until October, though we'll need to have it on the agenda a month or two before so that everyone can weigh in and he can prepare his self-evaluation). If we're able to redline any changes for next board meeting, I'd need it by Monday May 5th, or for the following month, I'd need it by Friday June 13th. No rush on this one.
Thank you all!
