Fiction/Nonfiction Facet - Further Information

01/10/2017 - 15:33 - by Scott Brandwein

SWAN has received a number of questions regarding the upcoming Fiction/Nonfiction facet including how the data is populated, what libraries' responsibilities are in maintaining this data, and how to identify problems. The Fiction/Nonfiction facet is a complex element of our catalog. To answer the seemingly simple question of "Is this a work of fiction?" there are a lot of factors at work.

We have created a document on the SWAN Support site giving a basic explanation of how the facet works behind the scenes and recommend that everyone take a look at it. Here is a direct link:

The Fiction/Nonfiction Facet: The Basics

Inside you'll find:

  • Formats the facet does and does not include
  • How data is encoded in bibliographic and item records
  • How to prepare pre-cats for the facet
  • Troubleshooting suggestions

We hope this clears up some of the confusion regarding this upcoming feature. If you have any further questions, please contact SWAN Support or reach out to Scott Brandwein directly at scott@swanlibraries.net.
