After much discussion with the Cataloging Advisory and Serial Users Groups, SWAN is implementing a change to call number standards for serial publications. Consumer and trade/B2B publications will no longer include enumeration (i.e. volume and issue numbers) in their call number analytics. These call number analytics will be chronology only following the base call number.
This change will begin with periodical issues with cover dates in 2019. These issues may come as early as October.
Please note that this change does not apply
to academic journals, medical journals, or comic books.
Volume information on these titles will follow the same formatting standards
as before. Volume information for monographs has not changed
either.
We understand this may raise some questions, so please review the following documentation:
Changes to Serial Call Numbers in 2019 -- A PowerPoint from the joint Serial Users Group and Cataloging Advisory Group meeting in August outlining the change. For those of you who were at the meeting, this has been updated to resolve some of the pending questions.
Volume Information in Serial Call Numbers -- An updated guide on creating call numbers for serials materials.
Updating Serial Control Records for Call Number Change -- A short guide to the changes you may make to serial control records for those titles that will no longer include enumeration.
These documents can also be found alongside the Cataloging Advisory & Serial Users Group Meeting Notes on our Meetings page.
