SWAN Board,

The most recent ALA Technology Reports issue is an overview written by Marshall Breeding about the current state of five open source library systems. I advised in one of the goals for SWAN’s strategic plan that we begin discussing these solutions as a concept together and then engage other groups in Illinois.

I have attached the ALA report issue to this email. I am not expecting a discussion on Friday, but I would like to use an upcoming SWAN Board meeting to provide a basic introduction to the concepts behind open source communities. Read this at your leisure.

I recommend you read the Introduction and chapter 3 on Evergreen—this is the software developed by a library consortium.
